Lake Jordan is the reservoir on the Coosa River. Although our lake is beautiful, it must be realized that the water has been used and reused several times before it reaches our shorelines. There are several EPA rules and regulations that aid in maintaining the quality of our lake but we also must realize that many creeks, small rivers and outflows from agricultural and commercial sources may contaminate our reservoir. In order to aid in monitoring the quality of our lake water, Lake Jordan HOBO trains and provides volunteers conduct monthly chemical and bacteria testing to identify certain contaminates and determine the overall health of the lake. Lake Jordan HOBO provides the training to volunteers, necessary equipment to conduct the testing, and reports the testing findings to Alabama Water Watch. Alabama Water Watch is a community-based, science-based watershed stewardship through citizen volunteer water monitoring. In addition, Lake Jordan HOBO is also an annual sponsor of Alabama Wildlife Foundation’s (AWF) Elmore County Water Festival. The Alabama Nature Center in collaboration with the Elmore County School System holds the Elmore County Water Festival at the Alabama Nature Center in Millbrook. This three-day event host around 1000 sixth grade public school students from Elmore County The program is specifically designed to address an Alabama Course of Study Objective for science; teaching them about the water cycle and the importance and value of clean water and personal responsibility for our water resources in an educational, fun and engaging atmosphere.
